The University of Kerala was founded in 1937 as the University of Travancore in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore (now southern Kerala and some bordering sections of Tamilnadu ). It is one of India’s initial 16 universities. Over the past 70 years, the University of Kerala has changed significantly both physically and internally.
The Trivandrum Observatory and Kerala University College, Thiruvananthapuram are two contemporary educational establishments that serve as the university’s initial roots. Originally established in 1834 as Maharaja’s Free School, University College was created by Mr. John Roberts and Maharaja Swathi Thirunal.
The university employs a choice-based credit and semester system for academic programs, and it is now implementing it at the undergraduate (bachelors) level. It also provides post-graduate (masters) programs. Typically, semesters stretch from February to July and August to January.
