Originally founded as the University of Mysore in July 1964, Bangalore University is situated in the Garden City of Bangalore, also known as the “IT Capital of India.” Its primary purpose was to incorporate universities that had previously existed as separate institutions of higher learning in the Bangalore metropolitan area and the districts of Bangalore, Kolar, and Tumkur. Bangalore University is anchored on Central College (CC) and Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) in the city.
Six faculties comprise the academic division of the university: Arts, Science, Commerce and Administration, Education, Law, and Engineering. The organization consists of 48 departments that lead to graduation, one College Graduate Institute (established 1994–95), four University colleges, 684 affiliated colleges, as well as additional centers and directorates for research and higher education.
