WES stands for World Education Services. It is a non-profit organization that provides credential evaluation services for students and professionals who have completed their education outside of the United States and Canada.
Purpose of WES:
WES evaluates your academic qualifications to determine their equivalency in the U.S. or Canadian education systems. This evaluation is often required for:
- Admission to universities or colleges
- Immigration (e.g., Canadian PR through Express Entry)
- Employment with government or private organizations
- Professional licensing in regulated fields
Types of WES Evaluations:
- Document-by-Document Evaluation
For basic education equivalency, used for employment or community college admissions. - Course-by-Course Evaluation
Includes GPA calculation and is used for university admissions and licensing boards. - WES ECA (Educational Credential Assessment)
Required for Canada immigration (IRCC). This is the most popular type of WES evaluation.
How the WES Process Works:
- Create an account on the WES website (wes.org)
- Select the type of evaluation (e.g., WES ECA for IRCC)
- Submit required documents – usually your transcripts and degree certificates
- Ask your university to send your transcripts directly to WES
- WES reviews and issues a report (usually within 7–20 business days)
Transcript Sending for WES:
- WES requires that transcripts are sent directly from the university in a sealed envelope.
- WES assigns a Reference Number that must be included on all documents.
WES is officially recognized by:
- IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada)
- Many U.S. and Canadian universities
- Employers and licensing bodies in North America
